In Keep The Love Alive, I briefly mentioned that distance makes easy for love to fade away. This is a normal process, as everything in this world really fades away along with time. This must not be the case, however, in long distance relationship. It simply means that you really have to invest on keeping the love alive or else the feeling between you will wane away.
There is one thing I believe can help us conquer this natural process of falling out: it is to shower each other with overflowing amount of attention. By doing this, you are basically putting each other on the same spotlight, a place you both need to maintain so that you can both shine out despite the presence of other destructive and competing things around you.
This can be done in countless ways, but I am listing here a few tips based on experience.
Pay attention to small details as your partner shares his or her story. There will be times when the symptoms of a problem are already apparent and yet we cannot open up. Paying attention to details is a special skill you both need to develop so that you both can spot salient points in each other’s story. When put together, little acts of concern can deeply be appreciated and they are translated into one great word—LOVE.
Affirmations are important if you both want to last in long distance relationship. This is, however, not easy to do because how can you affirm each other when you are living away from each other. You can only get valuable information through communication. Simple accomplishments need to be affirmed and praised. With this, your partner will surely feel important.
Readiness to listen as your partner unloads emotional burdens. Here you have to become a human “sponge” so that you can absorb the burdens being unloaded by your partner. You can only accomplish this by listening. As a partner, you need to show care with each other. Since you are separated by distance, physical caring is practically impossible. Constant monitoring on each other’s lives can both help you to be caring.
